Girls Just Wanna Have…a Chance to Win

I’ve been pretty busy lately, but I’ve wanted to find a few minutes to talk about the president’s likely veto on a Republican based law set on banning transgender male athletes from competing against females. This is a controversial topic, and everyone that has a child involved in sports seems to have an opinion about this. I’m not going to say I’m right, but I hope I’ll show why blind party politics is never anything I support.

Males are born genetically bigger, stronger, and faster than females. It’s science, it’s not demeaning. Yes, there are some females that are bigger, stronger, and faster than males, but in general the overwhelming majority of males are genetically born with greater aerobic capacity and muscular strength than women. This is why men’s sports are more popular than women’s. The games that men play are much faster and athletic than women’s sports. It’s why male athletes get paid more than female athletes. Fans want to watch male professional and college athletes at the highest level do things that 99% of the rest of the world cannot.

Male athletes can just do things physically that most women cannot. It’s not a knock on women, it’s just reality. It’s why women’s sports should be protected. It’s why for years there have been men’s and women’s sports. If men and women were physically equal, there would be no need to have separate teams and leagues. Fans would pay the same amount of dollars to watch female sports or you would see co-ed professional teams if men and women were athletic equals. That’s just not the case. However, over the last few years an interesting trend has been developing in the world of sports that is jeopardizing female athletics even more than the bigger spotlight and dollars male athletes get over females: transgender males are competing in female events AND winning.

I want to preface this by saying that I consider myself to be a relatively liberal person. In modern times, people would label me as a Democrat, Libtard, PC, Snowflake, or Triggered. While I’m not one to label people and name-call, I am one that believes every person on the face of this earth deserves to live their one life the way they choose. It is not for me or anyone else to judge the choices they make that make them happy. I’m not sitting here and saying I understand why people make those choices, but I accept them and do not judge them for whatever makes them happy. I run a school that has a culture of fully embracing all people and lifestyles, and I am proud that I have had a major factor in shaping that culture. I am happy that our country has become more open and accepting of people that live “alternative” lifestyles from what most of us would call normal. While there is deep seated hatred and anger from many people in our country towards these people, there are many that support them and are open to allowing ways for them to express themselves and live their lives just like you and I. However, as a sports fan and parent, I have to draw the line when it comes to genetically born males competing against female athletes.

I can’t say I empathize with transgender athletes because I’m not transgender. However, I can try to understand the emotional challenges they must face while growing up and the liberation and happiness they must feel as they transition to the gender they identify with. There are many pills and hormones that accompany the changes it takes for a male to transition to a female. Despite the lengthy process of hormones and elaborate combination of pills, they don’t diminish genetic aerobic capacity and muscular strength. However, as our country has opened its mind to transgender people, it is opening up opportunities to compete in sports in a way that is harmful to biological females.

If standing up for female rights makes we a triggered, snowflake, libtard, then why are so many people in agreement that biological males should not be allowed to compete in female sports? It’s why calling people names and labeling them based on political beliefs is foolish. It’s also why blindly supporting party politics is ignorant on both sides of the aisle. While, I whole-heartedly support a person’s right to identify as whatever gender they choose, I will always believe it is simply not fair for a biological male to complete against female athletes.

Now, I do not think there are average male athletes looking to compete against females so they can win where they couldn’t before. I really believe that transgender male athletes are looking to compete against females because they identify as a female. They want to be with people that dress, look, and feel like them. Yet, their inclusion in female athletics is upsetting the very people they want to be. Therefore, if we are going to allow this, we need to create a separate level of competition for transgenders. Our country must protect female athletes. Too many female athletes are working too hard and too long, only to have their moment of glory taken by a biological male transgender athlete.

There is a reason we have had men’s and women’s sports in our country for decades, so if we are going to embrace transgender atheletes then we need to give them their own platform and place to perform. If we want to really celebrate and honor transgender athletes, allow them to compete against each other. It could help raise awareness and acceptance at a higher level than the negative stigma that is being associated with transgender males cleaning up in female sports. Some people will say there aren’t enough transgender athletes to form their own leagues or competitions. That may be the case right now, but if those leagues and competitions are set up more transgender athletes will find them. They will begin to feel comfortable and will have a place to compete against their peers with their success honored and celebrated instead of villanize.

It’s rare when politics cross into the world of sports. That’s the beauty of sports. For a few hours, we are unified in our support of a group of people wearing a designated uniform. We don’t ask the people next to us what their political affliation is, because we don’t care. We’re not worridd about the athletes views on abortion or gun control. What we care about is our kid or team winning. Politics are left behind during sporting events, until athletes and sporting events are called into questions over fairness. Allowing genetically born males to compete against females isn’t fair. The government was called upon to intervene with Major League Baseball when steroid use was running rampant through the sport and unions would not allow or support drug testing and suspension because the equity of the sport and its athletes were not fair. It’s why the government is being asked to intervene now with transgender athletes defeating females who have trained for years only to come up short against biological males. I don’t remember this being a politically charged or divided issue, but an issue where an autonomous authority was needed to help restore competitive balance.

Baseball stars testifying before Congress about their knowledge and involvement with steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

Unfortunately, in the year 2023 nothing the government does is without politcal divide. Again, the government is being called upon to help restore the competitive fairness in sports, but somehow this has become a politically charged issue with both sides digging in along party lines. As an open-minded citizen, I don’t understand why one party largely refuses to accept these people into our society and the other insists on violating the rights of female athletes. Can’t we find a reasonable compromise? Can’t the party that prides itself on relying upon science, while the other wants to dismiss it, understand that genetically born males have a phsyical advantage over females? Can’t they understand that when those athletes have been training and competing for years, they will always outperform most, if not all, female athletes? Can’t they understand that by saying they want to allow transgender female athletes the same opportunities as males, that those opportunities do not exist for females because of the biological differences? Biological females cannot compete with males because of the science.

It just seems that during a time when our country has made progress with women’s and transgender rights it should make a common sense decision. Instead, we are only alienating female athletes and demonzing transgenders even more. As a relatively liberal person, this is one issue the Democratic Party has clearly gotten wrong. It’s why I will continue to struggle with anyone that swears an allegiance to any political party, because to blindly accept all of the beliefs, policies, and ideology of one group is dangerous for our country and does not have the best interest of all people at heart.

I have been in education for over 20 years, and it has been an amazing and rewarding career. I grew up on the east side of St. Louis, and I'm an avid sports fan. My three biggest addictions in life are the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and University of Illinois athletics. I love listening to rock blues, and americana styled music. Throughout the years I have coached boys and girls basketball from the youth levels to the varsity level, and the last 10 years I have coached travel baseball. I have a passion for writing, and a long list of experiences and topics that I like to share my thoughts on. The best part about writing, are the conversations and thoughts that are shared as a result.
